Poetry Appreciation

Through this course, we shall acquire the skills required read a poem on its own terms and to offer a criticism of it. We shall pay due attention to the vocabulary of poetry criticism (i.e., terms such as: metaphor, imagery, meter, rhyme, diction, voice etc.) but more importantly, we shall begin to orient ourselves to the special kind of language that is poetry.

Each session will be centered around a theme or topic, and we will typically study 2 poems per session. The poems for study will be made available to the student either in electronic form or through handouts.
