Profile Summary 

Rashmi Dube Bhatnagar is Professor of English at Shiv Nadar University. In January 2014, Dr. Bhatnagar was elected for a five-year term by members across American universities to the South Asian Literature discussion group of the foremost professional organization for the discipline of English, the Modern Language Association (MLA). This prestigious position testifies to the international reputation that she brings to SNU. She has taught in three American universities (University of Pittsburgh, Boise State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln) as well as Indian universities such as Indraprastha College for Women and SGTB Khalsa College at the University of Delhi. Her strong commitment to disseminating research and scholarship across continents is evident from the fact that in October of 2012, Dr. Bhatnagar organized a roundtable discussion on the shootings at a Sikh gurudwara at the Annual Conference of South Asia in Madison (US), later that month she was invited to speak at Wolfson College, Oxford University (UK). The following month November 2012 she was Research Fellow at the English Department in University of Delhi.

Teaching & Research Interests: 

Dr. Bhatnagar’s areas of research interest include philology, the fifteenth century Bhakti poetess Meera, female infanticide in colonial India, realism in Indian language literatures and Anglophone novel, Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) and secularism. She wrote her doctoral dissertation on 18th century English literature with a focus on the satirist Jonathan Swift. She is co-founder of the Hindi Urdu workshop series. Her work across her entire career has given her a powerful and unusual perspective on postcolonial writing and the construction of "South Asian Literature" in a global context. Currently she is completing a book entitled World and Bhasha Literatures: Revolutions in Philology.


2014-2019. Elected by MLA (Modern Language Association of America) for five year term Discussion Forum LLC South Asian and South Asian Diasporic. The norm for this elected office is that I will be Secretary (2016) Treasurer (2017) and President (2019). Participated in my first meeting at MLA’s annual meet in Chicago, 2014.

Elected Advisory Member of Editorial Board for the top ranking American literature and theory journal boundary2 2016.  Advisory Editors provides the journal with an original essay or research article, recommends and reviews submissions from contributors, solicits articles from leading scholars, and edits a dossier for publication in the journal. Attended editorial meeting of the journal at the University of Pittsburgh, Nov 2014.
